IN 2014 local films remained stable in Denmark and Sweden whereas Icelandic films at home climbed to a level not seen since 1995. In all three Nordic territories a local film took the top of the charts: The Absent One in Denmark, Life in a Fishbowl in Iceland and The 100 Year-Old Man Who Climbed out the Window and Disappeared in Sweden.

Denmark: 27% market share for local fare
For the fourth year in a row, Danish films sold more than three million tickets and enjoyed a ‘stable and high’level of admissions according to the Danish Film Institute CEO Henrik Bo Nielsen. Danish films’market share reached 27% and as many as five local titles, catering for different audiences, found a place at the Top 10 next to US blockbusters.

Two local sequels dominated the Top 10. The second film in the Department Q series The Absent One stormed at number one with 764,002 admissions (768,233 in total) while the comedy The Reunion 2 the Funeral (follow-up to the 2011 hit) came in at number two. Another three Danish films exceeded 200,000 admissions: the franchise film Father of Four (287.324) the dramas Speed Walking (250.681) and Silent Heart (236.818).

The most successful Danish documentaries were two titles produced by Danish Documentary: The Newsroom-Off the Record and Good Things Await that sold respectively 12.356 and 11.309 tickets.
Two Swedish films were the top grossing Nordic films of 2014: Waltz for Monica directed by the Dane Per Fly (159.932 admissions) and The 100 Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared (80.409 admissions).

Iceland: local films climb to the Top
After a morose 2013, Icelandic films were back on track and achieved very good results in 2014 according to trade association FRISK. Nine Icelandic films premiered and had a 13.3% share of the B.O. estimated at around ISK 197 million, the highest result since measurement began in 1995. In terms of admissions, local films attracted 148,000 cinemagoers or 11% of the market. This is significantly better than the previous year when seven Icelandic films had only 3.6% of B.O. revenues and even less in admissions.

The biggest hit of the year was the Icelandic Oscar entry Life in a Fishbowl by Baldvin Z that sold 47,982 tickets, ahead of The Hobbit-The Battle of the Five Armies (40,345). Another two Icelandic films entered the Top 20: The family film The Biggest Rescue by Bragi Þór Hinriksson released in October 2014 grossed ISK37,064.927 for a sixth place and The Grandad by Bjarni Haukur Þórsson based on his own stage play grossed ISK22.185,100 for a 17th place at the Top 20.

No Icelandic film made it in the top 20 in 2013. General admissions in Iceland were down 2.3% from 2014 to 1.3 million, while BO revenues remained relatively stable at IKR 1.485.618.475, down only 0.4 from 2013.

The most successful Nordic non-national film was The 100 Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared with 17,042 admissions and ISK 18,307,800 gross revenues.

Sweden: 100 Year-Old Man Boosts Local Market Share
Preliminary figures from the Swedish Film Institute reveal that Swedish films remained stable in 2014 compared to 2013, selling a total of 4.1 million tickets, representing a 25.1% market share, against 24.8% in 2013. Total admissions dropped 2% to 16.3 million.

The comedy The 100 Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared was by far the biggest selling title of 2014 with over 1.1 million admissions, ahead of The Hobbit -The Battle of Five Armies (729,143). Released in December 2013, Felix Herngren’s take on Jonas Jonasson’s best-selling novel totalled 1,585,042 admissions, making it the sixth most successful Swedish film since 1963/64.

Two other Swedish films found a spot in the 2014 Top 10 admissions: the children’s animated film Bamse and the City of Thieves (312,952), and the final film in the ‘Sune’trilogy The Anderssons Rock the Mountain (308,312) released last Christmas. As the second instalment was released in December 2013 and continued to play strongly throughout 2014, the second and third film in the comedy series produced by Eyeworks Sweden were both in the 2014 Swedish Top 10.

The documentary A Thousand Pieces (Tusen bitar) about legendary singer/songwriter Björn Afzelius was the most popular Swedish doc of the year with 127,000 admissions. This makes it the third most successful Swedish documentary since 2000, after Palme (around 243,000 admissions) and Searching for Sugar Man (around 148,000 admissions).

Six out of ten of the most popular Swedish films of the year were adaptations of best-selling novels.

The most successful Nordic non-national film was the Finnish/Swedish co-production The Raspberry Boat Refugee about a Swede trapped in a Finnish body that attracted over 100,000 people.
