More than 20 top Nordic TV and media executives will be under the spotlight at the upcoming MIP TV market in Cannes (April 13-16) as part of the first ever ‘Focus on the Nordics’.

The event is curated by Annie Wegelius, (pictured) former director of programming at Swedish pubcaster SVT, and Thomas Hedberg, founder of Titan TV. It is co-hosted by MIPTV organizer Reed MIDEM and some of the Nordic regions’ leading broadcasters, media companies, trade associations and organisations, including Nordisk Film & TV Fond.

The Fund’s CEO Petri Kemppinen said: “Considering the growing demand for high quality Nordic scripted/non-scripted content and formats, the wealth of talents and experienced TV and digital people in our region, we can only rejoice to be associated to this unique opportunity to showcase our Nordic savoir-faire and connect with global players. “

Wegelius said: “Because the digital revolution came early to our region, we are not only comfortable with next-generation technology, but we have had more than 10 years of experience in understanding how it impacts on consumer behaviour, rights issues and the challenges of piracy. We also operate in a brutally competitive market, where budgets are small but the expectations of our well-educated audiences high. That makes us an interesting test ground for new ideas, on the basis that if a show can make it up here, it can make it anywhere. Lastly, we’re not afraid to take creative risks, which is one of the reasons we punch well above our weight in drama, documentary and formats."

‘Focus on the Nordics’ will consist of a conferences, networking opportunities and showcases of the best Nordic content during the MIPTV week and preamble MIPFORMATS and MIPDOC (April 11-12). It will culminate with a full day spotlight on Tuesday April 14 that will end with a party at the Hotel Martinez with dance-music acts and DJs from the Nordic region.
