Thanks to the comedy The Reunion (Luokkakokous) that is driving admissions since February, and Big Game that just opened at number one last Thursday, cinema attendance in Finland has already passed the one million cap, a level achieved only once before so early in the year in the 2000s.

Last time the million admission mark was passed in March was in 2013 when the divorce comedy 21 Ways to Ruin a Marriage –released early February- went straight to the top charts and ended up selling 403,045 tickets.

This year another comedy is making it big at the Finnish box office: the Finnish remake of the Danish 2011 hit Klassefesten. The Finnish version produced by Jesse Fryckman for Solar Films has now sold 370,718 admissions in four weeks from 96 screens. Last weekend it was pushed down to number two at the domestic chart by the new opener Big Game by Jalmari Helander, available in 113 screens, but The Reunion still registered the best admission per screen average (291 vs 254 for Big Game).

So far 11 Finnish films –out of 30 local premieres in 2015- have opened in Finland. Top five local films after The Reunion include Ricky Rapper and the Scrooge of Seville (283,164 admissions), Vares-The Sheriff (109,970), Adult Camp (108,539) and Baby Girl Eila & Rampe (52,952).

Last weekend Jörn Donner’s Marimekko biopic Armi Alive! opened at number five and Klaus Härö’s war drama The Fencer was number six.

Mainstream Finnish titles still to open include Petri Kotwica’s Absolution, Antti Jokinen’s Wildeye, Teppo Airaksinen’s Lapland Odyssey 2, Saara Cantell’s Jill & Joy’s Winter and Pekka Karjalainen’s Heavysaurs-The Movie
